  • Description

Tanzania's President Julius Nyerere was installed on Saturday (29 August) as the first Chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam.

On July 1st the three constituent parts of the University of East Africa -- Makerere College, Kampala; Nairobi University College, and Dar es Salaam University College -- split up to become universities in their own right.

The ceremony of installing President Nyerere as Dar es Salaam's Chancellor was performed by the new University's Vice-Chancellor, Mr Pius Msekwa, who was until recently executive secretary of the ruling TANU Party in Tanzania.

Dar es Salaam University stands on a hill some 12 miles north of the capital. It was built largely with gifts from West Germany and Britain, and has been acclaimed for the brilliance of its architecture.

Lending local colour to what would be a staid academic occasion in Europe, were a number of Africans dancing in the University grounds to local bands. A blazing 'freedom torch' of Tanzania was also carried in the academic procession.
