    The committees tries to find these so-called disaprecidon... people who were arrested by the secret police and never seen again. There are thousands of the...most of whom the committee presumes dead. But without certainty, families refuse to give up hope.

    This woman begged for help in finding her son. He's twenty years old, she said, the police took him away a year ago and now they say they don't know anything about him.

    More important than its concern for the dead is the committee's work with the living.

    This is one committee activity...a soup kitchen for children whose parents are dead or arrested or out of work for political or economic reasons. Many fathers lost their jobs because of their association with the previous left-wing government. Others were laid off in the economic depression which followed the military takeover. In Santiago along the committee runs 272 soup kitchens for school children like this one. In addition if runs free clinics and offers legal and social services for people identified with the previous government.
