  • Description

In a giant airlift by the United Nations, large consignants of food and supplies - more than 100 tons a day - are being flown daily to the Congo's famine-stricken province of Kasai. VISNEWS cameraman Ray Robinson flew on one of these relief missions from Nairobi Jan 23, to Usumburu in the trust territory of Ruanda-Urundi by a Royal Air Force Beverley transport aircraft.

The plane was loaded with 60 large tents to establish an emergency hospital. They were handed to UN troops at Usumburu for transportation to Kasai where 200 people are reported to be dying in the refugee camps every day.

Just before the Beverley took off for Nairobi again, a plane carrying 38 refugees arrived from Stanleyville, capital of Orientale Province. The 1,000 Europeans there have been suffering savage reprisals from pro-Lumumba soldiers since the deposed Premier was put in the custody of the Katanga army Jan 17. Many Belgians have been robbed and beaten.

Three battalions of Belgian troops were reported to have flown to Ruanda-Urundi Jan 22, ready to rescue Europeans from the reign of terror in Stanleyville.
