  • Description

On the third day of his four-day State Visit to London France's President de Gaulle, called to see the Chelsea Pensioners, Apr 7, at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. His visit to the old soldiers was the third engagement of the day, in a tight programme that will finish with a Gala Performance at Covent Garden Opera House.

With the Duke of Edinburgh - who accompanied him to the review of the Queens Troops earlier in the day - President and Madame de Gaulle arrived at the hospital by car. About 70 Chelsea Pensioners, lined up, in their red frock coats and black tricorn hats, to be inspected by the President.

Premier Harold Macmillan, was host to the French Visitors at a Luncheon given by the British Government, at the Hospital. It was the first time in the 300 year history of the Hospital that it has been used by the British Government to entertain a foreign visitor.

Tonight the President and his wife, will dine with the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, before they leave for Covent Garden to attend a Gala Performance of the Royal Ballet company.
