A 21-man table-tennis team from the People's Republic of China played its first matches in Singapore on Saturday night (8 July) and was given a rousing welcome by thousands of excited fans.

Singapore's Lim Chee Yoke -- seen here in the darker shirt -- opened the series with a match against star Chinese player Chou Chin Chun. The Chinese player immediately established his superiority, with quick accurate returns and some masterly displays of backhand volleying which had the capacity crowd cheering his skill. A large percentage of the crowd was Chinese, and some of the top community leaders were present for the matches.

The Chinese team which included four female payers later played exhibition matches for the crowd. Their eight-day tour of Singapore, held at the invitation of Singapore table-tennis enthusiasts, is scheduled to end on the 15th of July when the team will leave for New Zealand and Australia.
