    China's modernisation of her oil industry has taken another great leap forward with the start of production at the huge petro-chemical complex in Sinkiang Province in the north west of the country.

    SYNOPSIS: Construction of the petro-chemical complex began in 1975 following the development of the Karamai Oil Fields which were opened up in 1956. Gasoline, kerosine, diesel and fertiliser will all eventually be produced at the plant. Already working is an atmospheric vacuum distillation plant, an asphalt oxidation unit and twenty eight other major auxiliary installations. China's oil industry has boomed in recent years and with the discovery of new deposits it will become a major world producer. It's already self-sufficient in oil and is exporting small quantities. It produces an estimated one point eight million barrels a day and aims to boost production to four hundred million tonnes by 1990. And recently the United States, Secretary for Energy, James Schlesinger estimated China's untapped oil reserves at more than three times those known to b e present in the United States. But although this a highly sophisticated complex, Reuters reports that some western experts believe that China will have to import technology it is to fully exploit its oil wealth.
