  • Description

Italy's controversial divorce bill, which became law on December 1st last year, is still arousing deep feelings throughout the country. In Rome yesterday (September 20), for example, supporters of the divorce bill--including at least one bishop--gathered for a rally staged to counter an anti-divorce movement which plans to have the bill abolished.

SYNOPSIS: Italy's controversial divorce bill, which became law last year, is still at the centre of a major row. On the one hand is a movement of over a million petitionists who want the bill abolished. On the other, a group of divorce supporters--including Bishop Eusebio Pace--who rallied in a Rome square on Monday night to protest against the abolition movement. Some of their opponents were there too.

Main speaker at the meeting was a liberal member of Parliament's Chamber of Deputies, Loris Fortuna. He was one of the bill's original proposers.

The anti-divorce lobby, meanwhile, has collected a petition of over one million signatures calling for its abolition--enough, according to some reports, to make abolition automatic under Italian law.
