Mrs. Pat Nixon, wife of the American President, arrived in Abidjan on Friday (7 January) at the start of a three-day visit at the invitation of the Ivorian Government. She arrived by air from Accra. Earlier, she'd attended the inauguration of Liberian President Tolbert in Monrovia. She returns to Washington on Sunday (9 Jan.).
Mrs. Nixon said on arrival at the airport: "I surely appreciate this wonderful welcome you have given me and I bring to you cordial greetings from the President and the people of the United States".
Later, she visited a women's institute building on the outskirts of Abidjan. With her was the wire of the Ivorian President, Mme. Therese Houphouet-Boigny. Together they toured the building where a number of different examples of Ivorian products were on display.

The Ivory Coast's President, Felix Houphouet-Boigny, was resent to greet his distinguished guest. Upon her arrival, Mrs. Nixon said: "I surely appreciate this wonderful welcome you have given me and I bring you cordial greetings from the President and the people of the United States." In a welcoming speech, President Houpheuet-Boigny expressed the pleasure of his government and people of the Ivory Coast at her visit. The American First Lady had just completed a visit to Accre and was starting a two-day visit to the Ivory Coast with her arrival in Abidjan.
Later during the day, Mrs. Nixon and the wife of the Ivorian President visited a women's institute building on the outskirts of the capital.
She toured the building, which houses number of classes in domestic science, including cooking and sewing. A purpose of the visit was to point out the growing position of women in Ivorian society. Earlier during her trip, she'd attended the inauguration of Liberia's President Tolbert in Monrovia. Later on Friday, Mrs. Nixon was guest of honour at a sta??? banquet given by President Houphouet-Boigny.
