Background: The United Nations yesterday (Tuesday) suspended its Middle East debate for 24 hours to seek agreement on a formula for extending the Israel-Egypt ceasefire, which is due to end on Thursday (November 5). One of the last speakers in the debate was Nigeria's Permanent Representatives to the United Nations, Mr Edwin Ogebe Ogbu.

In his proposal, which included a revised version of the Afro-Asian draft, Mr Ogbu appealed to the parties to observe the cease-fire for a period of three months in order to facilitate the task of the special representatives of the U.N. Secretary-General in the Middle East, Dr. Gunnar Jarring.

He also urged the General Assembly to reaffirm "that the establishment of peace requires the respect for and the acknowledgement of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every state in the area."
