  • Description

British peace emissary Lord Carver said on Thursday (3 November) that he was making progress in ceasefire talks on the country's five-year Black nationalist guerrilla war with Rhodesian officials. He was due to meet civilian officials following talks the day before with army, air force and police chiefs.

SYNOPSIS: Lord Carver arrived in Salisbury for the talks with Mr. Smith and his ministers and Black nationalist leaders.

However, he said later he had not yet seen Mr. Smith and was not sure if he would. He did say he was making progress, but he did not elaborate. Lord Carver's arrival in salisbury had been greeted by angry Rhodesian Black nationalist demonstrators who pelted his car with rotten tomatoes and bananas. Then a rocket slammed into the plush Elephant Hills Hotel, Victoria Falls, and a Rhodesian Government minister said it was a gesture by Zambia to mark the emissary's arrival. In spite of the hospitality, Lord Carver and UN representative General Prem Chand intend to continue their ceasefire discussions.
