Background: Leipzig's 1976 Spring Fair was officially opened on Sunday (14 March) by the East German head of state, Mr Erich Honecker.

More than 9,000 companies from 63 countries are represented at the fair which runs until next Sunday (21 March).

A huge variety of goods ranging from Heavy electrical equipment and earth-moving equipment to delicate textiles and glassware are on show.

The fair, which has become a show place for the light and heavy industry of Eastern European countries, has also attracted exhibits from many Western countries, including the United States, and also from many developing countries and China.

The Chinese display includes machinery, metallurgical products, foodstuffs and allied products.

Developing countries who are exhibiting at the Leipzig fair for the first time include Peru and Malaysia.

Many of the developing countries are showing an increasing percentage of technical consumer goods and industrial products.

An area of 3.7 million square feet (340,000 square metres) has been leased for exhibitions.

As well as a large range of industrial products being exhibited by Western countries, many Western banks are running negotiating and advisory bureaux.
