  • Description

In Israel the national airline, El Al, suspended operations on Tuesday (4 April) because maintenance men and administration staff held union meetings during morning working hours.

SYNOPSIS: As stranded passengers waited to be transferred to other airlines the El Al employees denied they were on strike, saying they had met to discuss a management letter advising them that collective labour contracts had been cancelled. For some travellers their action meant hardship.

El Al President Mordechai Hod also spoke about the disruption.

For years El Al has been seeking ways of combining the eight separate working committees they have to negotiate with into one or two at the most. The management have said workers can hold meetings during quiet periods in the afternoons, but not in the mornings. Elsewhere on Israel's troubled labour scene journalists, merchant seamen and teachers are also involved in industrial action.
