LOCATED IN SAIGON, THE CAPITAL, THE VIETNAM GLASS COMPANY WITH CAPITAL OF 1/2GBPM IS 51 PER CENT GOVERNMENT OWNED. ABOUT 45 PER CENT IS OWNED BY A FRENCH COMPANY AND THE REST IS HELD BY PRIVATE INVESTERS.

    IMPORT OF MACHINERY FROM THE U.S. WAS FINANCED BY THE U.S. GOVERNMENT. THE COMPANY PRODUCES 57 TONS OF GLASS ARTICLES A DAY. THE BULK OF RAW MATERIALS ARE AVAILABLE LOCALLY: SILICA FROM BARIA, CALCIUM AND DOLOMITE FROM HATIEN AND FELSPAR FROM DALAT. SODA ASH AND OTHER CHEMICALS ARE IMPORTED. THE FACTORY, BUILT IN 18 MONTHS, CAME INTO OPERATION AT THE END OF LAST YEAR AND PROVIDES EMPLOYMENT FOR 230 PEOPLE.

    ANOTHER ENTERPRISE IN THE FIGHT AGAINST THE COUNTRY'S UNDER DEVELOPMENT IS THE VIETNAM TEXTILE COMPANY - ALSO FACTOR CENT OWNED BY THE GOVERNMENT. THE FACTORY HAS 20,000 SPINDLES AND 400 LOOMS, MAKES 40,000 YARDS OF TEXTILES. OUTPUT IS TO BE DOUBLED NEXT YEAR.
