    IN PARIS TODAY, PRESIDENT DE GAULLE STOOD STIFFLY T O ATTENTION AMONG THE SPECTATORS ARE THE ASHES OF THE FRENCH RESISTANCE LEADER, JEAN MOULIN, WERE PLACED IN THE VAULT OF THE PANTHEON, RESTING PLACE OF THE NATION'S GREATEST MEN.

    JEAN MOULIN WAS PREFECT OF CHARTERS AT THE TIME OF THE GERMAN INVASION OF FRANCE IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR. HE ESCAPED TO ENGLAND, BUT RETURNED IN 1941 AS GENERAL DE GAULLE'S PERSONAL REPRESENTATIVE TO UNIFY THE RESISTANCE MOVEMENTS. HE DIED IN 1943 AFTER BEING TORTURED BY THE GESTAPO IN LYONS.

    THE ASHES OF JEAN MOULIN WERE PLACED IN THE CRYPT OF A CEMETERY IN EASTERN PARIS. THIS WEE, THE URN CONTAINING THE ASHES WERE TAKEN TO THE CHAPEL FOR RESISTANCE HEROES IN PARIS ON THE FIRST STAGE OF CONVEYING THEM TO THE PANTHEON.

    TODAY, THE ASHES WERE PLACED IN THE PANTHEON'S VAULT AMID ALSO CEREMONY, AFTER A MILITARY PARADE OUTSIDE THE PANTHEON BY UNITS OF THE PARIS GARRISON.

    THE ASHES WERE PLACED IN THE VAULT ALONGSIDE THOSE OF US FORMER FRENCHMAN AS VOLTAIRE, ROUSSEAU, ZOLA, AND BRAILLE. THE FRENCH CULTURAL MINISTER, M. ANDRE MALRAUX, DESCRIBED JEAN MOULIN AS ONE WHO HAD BEEN "THE CHIEF OF A PEOPLE IN DARKNESS."
