  • Description

Thousands of Greek-Cypriots held a series of demonstrations in Cyprus against Britain's decision to evacuate 8,000 Turkish Cypriot refugees from a British air base this weekend.

The first major demonstration on Friday (17 January) was held outside the sovereign base at Akrotiri where the Turkish refugees have been staying. A young Greek-Cypriot was killed after he was hit by a United Nations armoured car which was trying to break up the protestors. His death led to further demonstrations which continued on the following day in the capital, Nicosia, where British and United States Embassies were attacked.

The angry Greek-Cypriots set fire to the American Embassy's west wing and destroyed files and furniture. They ransacked the British Embassy and burned the files and passport applications. And in Limassol, they burned down a British Forces store and threw bombs into a British school.

On Saturday, (18 January) the first batch of 368 Turkish refugees flew out of Akrotiri Base to Adana in south east Turkey, from where they will return to northern Cyprus -- now under the control of Turkish Cypriots.
