  • Description

CAMEROUN THIS WEEK CELEBRATED THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ACCESSION TO POWER OF PRESIDENT AHMADOU AHIDJO.

STREETS IN THE CAPITAL, YAOUNDE, WERE DECORATED WITH NATIONAL FLAGS AND SLOGANS HAILING PRESIDENT AHIDJO AS "FATHER OF THE CAMEROUN NATION." HE WAS AT MASS RALLY IN YAOUNDE, WHERE HE SAW TRADITIONAL DANCING AND WATCHED A PROCESSION OF MEMBERS OF THE CAMEROUN NATIONAL UNION, THE WEST AFRICAN STATE'S ONLY POLITICAL PARTY.

THE VICE PRESIDENT, M. TCHOUNGRI, DELIVERED A SPEECH PRAISING PRESIDENT AHIDJO, WHO WAS PRIME MINISTER OF CAMEROUN FROM 1958 UNTIL THE COUNTRY BECAME INDEPENDENT FROM FRANCE IN 1960. IN MAY OF THAT YEAR THE 45-YEAR-OLD LEADER WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT AND HE'S HELD THE POST EVER SINCE.

A DECREE TO MARK THE ANNIVERSARY REDUCED PRISON SENTENCES AND LIFTED RESTRICTION ORDERS IMPOSED ON 129 PEOPLE ON GROUNDS OF SUBVERSION.
