Mr. Yoon Bo Sun, 62, was elected first President of the Second Republic of South?
Mr. Yoon Bo Sun, 62, was elected first President of the Second Republic of South Korea at a joint session of the National Assembly in Seoul, Aug 12.
A Presbyterian educated at Edinburgh University, Mr. Yoon won 208 of the 250 votes at the session. He is a former Mayor of Seoul and once served as Commerce Minister during the ousted Syngman Rhee Government. He leads one of the two factions dividing the majority Democratic party.
The rival faction of John M. Chang cast their votes for Mr. Yoon - to ensure - critics said - his removal as a candidate for the post of Prime Minister of which Mr. Chang aspired. Under the new constitution the powers of the presidency has been reduced.
President of the Upper House, Dr. George Paik, opened the joint-session and announced the result of the voting. One of the voters was Kim Do Yun, close friend of the new President and candidate for the Premiership.
