  • Description

LONDON'S BIGGEST FIRE FOR SEVERAL YEARS WAS FOUGHT BY NEARLY 400 FIREMEN TODAY (FRIDAY). THE FIRE SWEPT THROUGH A TIMBER YARD IN NORTH LONDON DESTROYING OFFICES, VEHICLES AND TIMBER. DAMAGE HAS BEEN ESTIMATED AT GBP250,000 STERLING.

ONE FIREMAN SAID THE FIRE WAS THE BIGGEST HE HAD SEEN SINCE THE SECOND WORLD WAR. FIVE FIREMEN WERE INJURED AND TAKEN TO HOSPITAL AND ABOUT 30 FAMILIES, MANY STILL IN NIGHT ATTIRE, WERE EVACUATED FROM HOMES NEAR THE TIMBER YARD.

THE FIRE WAS FANNED BY STRONG WINDS AND AT TIMES FLAMES WERE LEAPING 70 FEET (21 METRES) HIGH. THE BIGGEST DANGER WAS TO A LARGE PETROL STORAGE TANK NEARBY, BUT THE FIREMEN WERE ABLE TO KEEP THE FLAMES FROM REACHING IT.

MORE THAN 60 FIRE-FIGHTING APPLIANCES WERE USED TO CONTROL THE FIRE, WHICH BLAZED FOR SEVERAL HOURS. IT HAD BEEN REPORTED JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT, BUT FIREMEN WERE STILL ON THE SCENE NEARLY 12 HOURS LATER AS TIMBER WAS STILL SMOULDERING.
