    THE PROMINENT EAST GERMAN SKIER, DIETER NEUENDORF WON THE OBERSTDORF SKI JUMPING COMPETITION ON SUNDAY. IT WAS THE OPENING OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON IN EUROPE, MARKED BY FOUR CONTESTS, AT OBERSTDORF AND GARMISH IN WEST GERMANY, AND INNSBURCK AND BISCHOFHOFEN IN AUSTRIA. THE FOUR CONTESTS WILL CONCLUDE ON SUNDAY.

    NEARLY ONE HUNDRED WORLD CLASS SKIERS, INCLUDING MANY OLYMPIC CONTENDERS, TOOK PART IN THE CONTEST. OF THE WORLD'D TOP SKI-ING NATIONS ONLY CANADA AND BULGARIA WERE NOT REPRESENTED.

    NEUENDORF JUMPED 76.5 METRES IN HIS FIRST JUMP, AND 77.5 METRES IN HIS SECOND ATTEMPT. HE WON POINTS FOR POSTURE, ALTHOUGH THE AGGREGATE DISTANCE FOR HIS TWO RUNS HALF A METRE LESS THAN THAT OF LARS GRINI, OF NORWAY, WHOSE JUMPS MEASURED 77 AND 77.5 METRES.

    LAST YEAR'S FOUR TOURNAMENTS OVERALL WINNER, BJORN WIRKOLA, OF NORWAY, WAS THIRD. HIS JUMPS MEASURED 75 AND 78 METRES. HOWEVER, HE WON THE SECOND LEG OF THE TOURNAMENT AT GARMISH YESTERDAY (MONDAY).

    THIS YEAR'S FOUR AUSTRO-GERMAN TOURNAMENTS HAVE AROUSED SPECIAL INTEREST BECAUSE THEY ARE EXPECTED TO PROVIDE SOME GUIDE TO THE PERFORMANCE OF OLYMPIC COMPETITORS.
