  • Description

THE ENGLISH SOCCER TEAM ARSENAL PUT ON ITS BEST PERFORMANCE OF THE SEASON TODAY (SATURDAY) TO BEAT SHEFFIELD UNITED 6 - 2 AT ARSENAL'S HOME GROUND AT HIGHBURY, IN NORTH LONDON. THE WIN PUTS ARSENAL WITHIN TWO POINTS OF THE LEAGUE LEADERS.

THE FIRST GOAL OF THE MATCH WAS SCORED BY A SHEFFIELD PLAYER, REECE, THREE MINUTES AFTER THE START, RECEIVING A SHORT PASS FROM JONES, REECE WHIPPED THE BALL OFF HIS TOES AND QUICKLY BROKE AWAY, EVADED THE DEFENCE AND SENT THE BALL INTO THE NET OFF THE NEAR POST.

BAKER OF ARSENAL SCORED THE EQUALISER NINE MINUTES LATER. RUNNING THROUGH TO MEET THE BALL HE DIVED FULL-LENGTH TO HEAD IT JUST INSIDE THE NEAR POST, SUFFERING A TEMPORARY SHOULDER INJURY IN THE PROCESS BY COLLIDING WITH A DEFENCE PLAYER.

AFTER 20 MINUTES, THE BALL RAN TO ARMSTRONG OF ARSENAL, WHO PRODDED IT HOME. IN ANOTHER ARSENAL PLAY, STORE HIT A LONG BALL TO THE FAR POST AND SKIRTON GUIDED IT IN WITH HIS HEAD. IN THE 44TH MINUTE, MALLENDER HIT A HIGH CENTRE TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE GOAL, WHERE BAKER HEADED IT IN.

IT LOOKED AS THOUGH THE SHEFFIELD UNITED GOAL-KEEPER HODGKINSON, HAD KEPT THE BALL OUT, BUT A LINESMAN SIGNALLED THAT IT HAD CROSSED THE LINE AND THE REFEREE AWARDED A GOAL. ARSENAL SCORED ITS FIFTH GOAL SOON AFTER THE START OF THE SECOND HALF.

ARMSTRONG WENT SPRINTING THROUGH THE MIDDLE TO FASTEN ON TO A PASS FROM COURT, AND HE FLICKED THE BALL AWAY FROM HODGKINSON AS THE GOAL-KEEPER DIVED AT HIS FEET. IT ONLY REMAINED FOR ARMSTRONG TO STROKE THE BALL INTO THE EMPTY GOAL. AFTER 66 MINUTES ARSENAL MADE ITS SIXTH GOAL.

SAMMELS HIT A LONG PASS THAT WAS PROMPTLY CHASED BY SKIRTON. THE ONLY DEFENDER WHO HAD A CHANCE TO STOP HIM WAS HODGKINSON AND HE ADVANCED FROM HIS GOAL ONLY TO HAVE THE BALL STROKED PAST HIM. AND THEN, QUITE UNNECESSARILY, ARSENAL CONCEDED A GOAL - SHEFFIELD UNITED'S SECOND.

MCLINTOCK AND COURT GOT INTO A TANGLE, BURNS THE GOAL-KEEPER CAME OUT TO JOIN THEM AND JONES OF SHEFFIELD WAS ABLE TO SHOOT INTO AN UNGUARDED GOAL.
