    Representatives of the fifteen African Governments that comprise the African Development Bank met in the Chamber of Agriculture and Industry in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, on Monday (15 June) at the opening of a four day conference to the problems of insurance in Africa.

    The countries represented were Algeria, Cameroun, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Malagasy Republic, Mali, Morocco, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Tunisia and the united Arab Republic (delegates from Algeria, Cameroun and Ghana did not arrive in time for the Commencement of the conference).

    M. Ola Vincent, Vice-President of the African Development Bank, opened the meeting which will consider the present state of the assurance and reinsurance market in Africa, measures to be taken at national level to favour the national assurance markets, the possibility of establishing regional co-operation in the field and the necessity of creating a regional reinsurance organisation.

    Organisations represented by observers included the International Conference of Assurance Controls of the French African States and Malagasy, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Federation of Afro-Asian Insurers and Reinsurers and the African Economic Community.
