At least 40 people in El Salvador were killed over the weekend of September 18 and 19 by severe flooding. Interim President Alvaro Magana declared a national state of emergency on the evening of September 19, adding that hundreds of people throughout the country had been affected by intense tropical rains. A Fire Department spokesman said 40 bodies had been found in wreckage left by a landslide in the Monte Bello district on the outskirts of San Salvador. A torrent of rocks, uprooted trees and mud had fallen on the area from the slopes of the San Salvador volcano. He said the Monte Bello death toll could rise to 60. There were reports from around the country of rivers overflowing their banks, but the extent of casualties and damage was not immediately known.
