  • Description

At a dinner party in Canberra tonight, the Prime Minister, Mr. Menzies, presented the Queen with a recently-completed outback landscape by the noted australian artist, Russell Drysdale. The painting, "Man in a Landscape," was painted from sketches made in the south-west Kemberleys in Western Australia. Mr. and Mrs. Drysdale were among the guests at the dinner party. The Queen presented Mr. Menzies with a gift to the nation of nine volumes containing an account of the voyages of Captain Cook. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh returned to Canberra at midday to join in the city's celebration of its jubilee. Dressed in favourite peacock blue silk ensemble, the Queen looked relaxed after a weekend in the mountain air.

Thousands of children lined the route of the Royal progress from the Fairbairn Air Base to Government House. And they massed on top of City Hill, cheering and waving.

This afternoon, the Queen and the Duke drove to Regatta Point to view the rapid development of the capital since their last visit in 1954. Regatta Point is a newly-built tourist kiosk above the level of the proposed lake.

One small boy was on high stilts to get a better view of the Queen and the Duke as they entered the building to view an elaborate model of the Canberra of the future.

The models include a ?kuster of buildings on top of Capitol Hill as well as details of the lakes scheme.

The National Capital Development Commission, Mr. J.W. Overall, then took the Royal couple to the viewing point outside to the progress of the ornamental lake scheme to be completed within the next twelve months. Both showed a keen interest in the growth of the city.
