  • Description

A Viet Cong detachment, thought to be about 400 strong, is holding down the advance of a Cambodian government relief column on its way to besieged Kompong Thom in northern Cambodia. The Viet Cong are dug in round the village of Taing Kouk, 52 miles (83 kilometres) north of Phnom Penh.

Guerrillas have blown up three bridges behind the advancing Government troops. 35 Cambodians are reported to have been killed in three days of fighting round Taing Kouk.

The Cambodians say they fought their way to within 300 feet of the village but had to withdraw. They are now dug in three sectors on the east, south and west sides of Taing Kouk.

American aircraft are supporting them with air strikes on the Viet Cong bunkers.

The Cambodian force is estimated to be 10,000 strong, half of them deployed along route 6, the main approach to Taing Kouk.
