Motorists in Nigeria -- the world's seventh largest crude oil producer -- have been hit by petrol shortages in recent days ... for the fifth time in six months.
The crisis began last week following industrial action by tanker drivers, who are protesting against alleged police harassment and excessive fines in the recently-established mobile traffic courts.
As petrol stations ran dry, the military authorities in the capital, Lagos on Tuesday (7 January) commandeered petrol tankers in an attempt to ease the situation. Queues at filling stations on Wednesday were controlled by police as motorists attempted to buy fuel however they could.
The situation in the provinces reflected the shortages in the capital, and in the north, lack of fuel has severely curtailed commerce. Meanwhile, the price of food and transport fares have rocketed as a result of the fuel crisis.
