Background: By what must have been one of the narrowest of margins, Alphonse halimi of France beat Freddie Gilroy of Ireland on points over fifteen rounds October 25 to regain the World bantam-weight championship he lost to Jose Becerra of Spain. The title became vacant earlier this year when Becerra retired.
The spacious Empire Pool at Wembley was packed. The fans were not disappointed, for the two little tough men certainly gave them an exciting spectacle.
Gilroy was judged to have taken most of the earlier rounds with aggressive two-fisted attacks to Halimi's body. But the fight almost came to a dramatic end during the thirteenth round. An uppercut from Halimi caught Gilroy flush on the chin and the Irishman pitched forward on the canvas. As the count reached three he began to stir. Then the bell sounded.
A little more wary in the final two rounds, Gilroy, convinced that he had done enough to win, stayed out of distance of Halimi's hard punching.
As Belgian referee Philip Backer raised Halimi's hand in victory the crowd booed and stamped their feet loudly in disapproval. But they calmed down and gave Halimi the generous reception he deserved.
Halimi will now have the incredible experience of being invited to fight the winner of the match between Brazilian Eder Jofre and Mexican Eloy Sanchez, who, on November 17, fight for the World bantam-weight championship - American version - in Los Angeles.
