    PRESIDENT LEOPOLD SENGHOR, OF SENEGAL, ON SATURDAY (2 DECEMBER) OPENED A WEEK-LONG PAN-AFRICAN CONGRESS ON AFRICAN PRE-HISTORIC IN DAKAR. TO COINCIDE WITH THIS, THE SIXTH CONGRESS ON PREHISTORIC RESEARCH, AN EXHIBITION DEPICTING PREHISTORIC AFRICA IS ALSO BEING STAGED.

    WHEN HE OPENED THE CONGRESS ON AFRICAN PREHISTORY, AT THE UNIVERSITY OF DAKAR, PRESIDENT TOLD MORE THAN 150 EXPERTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD THAT THANKS TO THE WORK OF PREHISTORIAN, AFRICA HAD APPEARED AS A CENTRE RADIATING LIFE, RESEARCH, INVENTION AND EXPRESSION FOR ALMOST TWO MILLION YEARS.

    HE WARNED THE DELEGATES AGAINST THE TEMPTATION TO YIELD TO THE PRESSURES OF THEIR GOVERNMENTS BY PRESENTING A PREHISTORY FEEDING THEIR NATIONALISM, IF NOT THEIR RACISM.

    PRESIDENT SENGHOR SUGGESTED THAT THE DELEGATES INCLUDE AMONG THEIR RESOLUTIONS TWO PROPOSALS FOR GOVERNMENTS: I. THE CREATION OF AN AFRICAN PREHISTORY SECRETARIAT WITH A PERMANENT HEADQUARTERS, AND 2. THE COMPULSORY TEACHING OF AFRICAN PREHISTORY IN SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES IN AFRICA AND THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.

    THE EXHIBITION OF PREHISTORIC AFRICA, HELD TO COINCIDE WITH THE CONGRESS, WAS OPENED BY THE SENEGAL MINISTER OF EDUCATION, M. MAHTAR M 'BOW. IT WAS ORGANISED BY M. HUGO, HEAD OF PREHISTORIC STUDIES AT IFAN THE INSTITUTE FUNDAMENTAL D'AFRIQUE NOIRE - IN DAKAR, AND M. THILMANS, AND ANTHROPOLOGIST AT THE IFAN MUSEUM.

    ON SHOW ARE NUMEROUS INTERESTING ARCHAEOLOGICAL FINDS, INCLUDING FRAGMENTS OF WEAPONS, JEWELLER AND TOOLS AS WELL AS ANTHROPOLOGICAL REMAINS.
