  • Description

Several hundred inhabitants from the Hasbaya district in southern Lebanon petitioned outside the Presidential Palace near Beirut on March II in a call for the continued presence of the army in their area.

A five-member delegation also asked a Presidential aide to convey their demand to President Suleiman Franjieh that Palestinian commandos be stationed away from populated regions.

After the demonstration, Mr. Bahjat Shame, mayor of Hasbaya, stressed that the region's inhabitants were not opposed to commando actions as such--although they were anxious to avoid Israeli reprisal attacks.

During filming of the incident, Lebanese army officials confiscated 150 feet of further coverage and the entire sound track.

SYNOPSIS: Outside the Presidential Palace near Beirut--petitioners holding a demonstration. They were the inhabitants of the Hasbaya district in southern Lebanon, who want Palestinian commandos to be based OUTSIDE populated areas.

The demonstrators also demanded that the Lebanese army remain in Hasbaya. A protest note was sent in to the President.

The inhabitants of Hasbaya stressed they were not opposed to commando actions as such. But they did want to avoid reprisal attacks from Israel. Just a few days earlier, they said, Israeli planes and artillery wounded two civilians--one of them a child--and destroyed several houses in the area.
