  • Description

FUTURE EXPANSION OF THE ECONOMY OF ZAMBIA AND THE PROGRESS AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE NATION AS A WHOLE WERE REFERRED TO BY PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA WHEN HE OPENED THE ANNUAL COPPERBELT AGRICULTURAL SHOW AT KITWE ON FRIDAY (30 MAY). THE SHOW, THE TWELFTH TO BE HELD AT KITWE, FEATURED A WIDE-RANGE OF ZAMBIA'S PRIMARY AND SECONDARY INDUSTRIES.

ADDRESSING THE CROWD, PRESIDENT KAUNDA SAID THAT COPPER AND AGRICULTURE WERE A VITAL PART OF THE NATION'S EXISTENCE. KITWE ITSELF WAS BASICALLY A COPPER TOWN, BUT ELSEWHERE AGRICULTURE WAS HELPING SUSTAIN THE LIFE OF THE NATION.

HE SAID IT WAS A MATTER OF GREAT SATISFACTION TO HIM THAT THE AGRICULTURE SHOW SHOULD BE HELD AT KITWE, BECAUSE IT WAS AN ACCEPTANCE THAT ALTHOUGH COPPER HAS LAID THE FOUNDATION FOR PROGRESS AND DEVELOPMENT, IT WAS AGRICULTURE THAT MUST BE THE LIFE-BLOOD.

BUT THE NATION COULD NOT BE SELF-RELIANT UNLESS THE INDIVIDUALS WHO MADE UP THE NATION WERE SELF-RELIANT, HE SAID. THE NATION COULD NOT BE SELF-SUPPORTING UNLESS THE ACTIVITIES OF ALL -- INDIVIDUALLY AND COLLECTIVELY -- WERE DIRECTED AT PRODUCING MORE.

LATER, PRESIDENT KAUNDA TOURED THE SHOW, SEEING SIDESHOW EXHIBITS, LIVESTOCK PARADES, INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITS, AND AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY.
