  • Description

Concorde 01 - the pre-production model undergoing current tests at the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) airfield in Filton, near Cristol - had to cut short its maiden flight today (Friday) when it ran into technical trouble on takeoff.

Britain's Chief test pilot Brian Trubshaw, explained later that one of his four after-burners (which give the extra thrust for takeoff) had cut out as he was halfway through the takeoff manoeuvre. To balance up, he quickly cut another after-burner on the opposite side - leaving him with only two. Then the under-carriage appeared to stick and he decided to cut short the flight - going straight in to land at Fairford instead of making the planned overland corridor flight to Cornwall and back.

With the price for Concorde now fixed, BOAC are planning to order five at a cost of approximately 75 million pounds (187,500,000 dollars - but they are not wiling to commit themselves until both the French and the British Governments negotiate overland corridors. And these cannot be worked out until the test flights are carried out successfully.

After landing, it was found that the problems were only minor ones but the date for the next flight has not been announced.

Concorde 01 is the third supersonic aircraft of the Anglo-French project - the earlier models, Concorde 001 assembled in France and Concorde 002 assembled in Britain.
