    JACKIE STEWART, A 25-YEAR-OLD SCOT, IN HIS FIRST FULL SEASON IN GRAND PRIX RACING, SCORED A MAGNIFICENT VICTORY IN THE 17TH INTERNATIONAL "DAILY EXPRESS" TROPHY FORMULA-ONE RACE AT SILVERSTONE CIRCUIT TODAY (SATURDAY).

    GRAHAM HILL, THE FORMER WORLD CHAMPION, IN A B.R.M. LED AT THE START, WITH THE PRESENT CHAMPION, JOHN SURTEES IN A FERRARI, AND STEWART, ALSO IN A B.R.M., CLOSE ON HIS TAIL. BUT HILL RETIRED WITH MECHANICAL TROUBLE, AND ANOTHER FORMER WORLD CHAMPION, AUSTRALIAN JACK BRABHAM TOOK OVER UNTIL HIS BRABHAM CAR CAUGHT FIRE.

    THE RACE THEN DEVELOPED INTO A BATTLE BETWEEN STEWART AND SURTEES. STEWART SHOT AHEAD OF SURTEES, WHO SET A LAP RECORD OF 113.30 MILES PER HOUR (182.33 KPH) IN A VAIN EFFORT TO CATCH THE YOUNG SCOT.

    STEWART COVERED THE 52 LAPS, TOTALLING 152 MILES (244.62 KILOMETRES), IN ONE HOUR 21 MINUTES 47.0 SECONDS AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 111.66 MPH (179.69 KPH).

    JOHN SURTEES WAS SECOND IN 1 HOUR 21 MINUTES 50 SECONDS. THIRD WAS MIKE SPENCE, ALSO OF BRITAIN, IN A LOTUS, WHO COVERED THE COURSE IN 1 HOUR 22 MINUTES 43.4 SECONDS. PEDRO RODRIGUEZ OF MEXICO, IN A LOTUS WAS FOURTH, JOACHIM BONNIER OF SWEDEN, IN A BRABHAM, WAS FIFTH, AND BRUCE MCLAREN OF NEW ZEALAND, IN A COOPER, WAS SIXTH.
