  • Description

AT THE PRETORIA PALACE OF JUSTICE YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) NELSON MANDELA AND THE OTHER SEVEN MEN -- FIVE AFRICANS, A WHITE MAN, AND AN INDIAN -- WHO HAD BEEN CONVICTED OF SABOTAGE ON THE PREVIOUS DAY, WERE SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT.

BEFORE THE SENTENCE WAS READ, SEVERAL HUNDRED POLICE PATROLLED PRETORIA'S CHURCH SQUARE FACING THE COURT.

OUTSIDE THE COURT THE CROWD, IN WHICH WHITES OUTNUMBERED AFRICANS, STOOD FOR THE MOST PART SILENT -- THERE WAS A SKIRMISH BETWEEN A MAN AND A PHOTOGRAPHER BUT POLICE QUICKLY STOPPED THE INCIDENT.

MR ALAN PATON THE AUTHOR OF "CRY THE BELOVED COUNTRY", MADE AN APPEAL FOR CLEMENCY. HE SAID HE REGARDED NELSON MANDELA AS "HEIR APPARENT" TO MR ALBERT LUTHULI. HE DESCRIBED MANDELA, SISULU, AND MBEKI, AS MEN OF "SINCERITY AND WITH VERY DEEP DEVOTION TO THEIR PEOPLE."
WHEN THE SENTENCES BECAME KNOWN THERE WAS A SIGH OF RELIEF FROM SOME PEOPLE -- THE CONVICTED MEN COULD HAVE BEEN CONDEMNED TO DEATH. SOME BURGED FORWARD TOWARDS THE COURT BUT THE POLICE HELD THEM BACK. OTHERS BROKE OUT SINGING "NKOSI SIKELELE AFRICA" -- THE ANTHEM WHICH HAS BECOME ASSOCIATED WITH AFRICAN NATIONALISM. SOME WOMEN PRODUCED POSTERS, ONE SAID: "YOU WILL NOT SERVE THESE SENTENCES AS LONG AS WE LIVE".

THE CROWD MOVED FORWARD AGAIN WHEN MRS MANDELA LEFT THE COURT. AS SHE ENTERED A CAR SHE GAVE THE CLENCHED FIRST SYMBOL OF THE BANNED AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS WITH NELSON MANDELA LED.

POLICE WITH DOGS HERDED PEOPLE OFF FROM ALLEYS LEADING TO THE BACK OF THE COURT WHEN THE CONVICTED MEN WERE REMOVED FROM THE BUILDING.

NO APPEAL HAS BEEN NOTED, BUT IT IS UNDERSTOOD THE DEFENCE ARE CONSIDERING ASKING FOR LEAVE TO APPEAL IN CERTAIN CASES.
