  • Description

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Geoffrey Fisher, on Nov 24, day-two of his visit to Jerusalem, visited the Dome of Rock, and walked along the Via Dolorosa to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Accompanied by the Anglican Archbishop of Jerusalem and members of the Roman Catholic, Armenian, and Greek Orthodox clergy, he began his tour with a visit to the mosque built over the Dome of Rock from where Mohamet ascended into heaven.

From there he walked along the Via Dolorosa in the footsteps of Jesus Chrish as he carried his cross to Calvary.

At the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Dr Fisher was welcomed by the Three Communities, custodians of Christ's tomb, and escorted from one shrine to another as an organ played God Save the Queen, and friars and monks rang bells.

Dr Fisher's middle east tour will take him on to Beirut and Istanbul before going to Rome to pay a courtesy visit to the Pope Dec 2.
