  • Description

VISITORS TO NIAGARA THIS SUMMER WILL FIND A CHANGE IN THE LANDSCAPE. IT IS A NEW BRIDGE OVER THE NIAGARA RIVER, BELOW THE FALLS, LINKING LEWISTON, NEW YORK, WITH QUEENSTON, ONTARIO. THREE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY FEET HIGH, THE STEEL STRUCTURE WILL PROVIDE AN UNSURPASSED VIEW OF THE NIAGARA GORGE.

BUILT AT A COST OF SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS, THE BRIDGE WILL BE SUPPORTED BY A FIXED STEEL ARCH WITH A 1,000-FT SPAN BETWEEN ABUTMENTS - LONGEST OF ITS KIND IN THE WORLD - FIFTY FEET LONGER THAN THE FORMER RECORD HOLDER, THE NEARBY RAINBOW BRIDGE. MANY OF THE GIRDERS AND MAIN STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS OF THE NEW BRIDGE ARE OF THE RECENTLY DEVELOPED HIGH-STRENGTH STEELS WHICH ARE MAKING POSSIBLE MANY ADVANCES IN CONSTRUCTION.

IN ADDITION TO THE SCENERY, MOTORISTS CROSSING THE NEW BRIDGE WILL ALSO ENJOY A VIEW OF THE GIANT NEW NIAGARA POWER PROJECT ON THE AMERICAN SIDE AND THE SIR ADAM BECK POWER STATION ON THE CANADIAN SIDE.

THE NEW BRIDGE IS THE LAST LINK IN A SUPER-HIGHWAY SYSTEM THAT WILL PERMIT UNINTERRUPTED DRIVING FROM NEW YORK CITY TO TORONTO.
