SYNOPSIS: Chelsea, playing here from left to right, treated their fans to a convincing win over Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Both teams had begun the season unevenly, but in this match Chelsea dominance was established from the start. After a fine sideline run by Steve Kember, Baldwin raced up to direct the centre-kick into the net.

In the second half Southampton showed occasional penetration but seemed to be missing the services of Welsh International, Ron Davies. In his place, though, Paine and Channon did their best to unsettle the Chelsea defence.

Steve Kember scored his first goal for Chelsea in the 62nd minute. It was his second home appearance since transferring from Crystal Palace.

Despite sporadic raids by Southampton the Chelsea defence held well.

Shortly before fulltime this penalty by John Hollins gave Chelsea a 3-nil victory.
