  • Description

Ideas ranging from a bath with a door in it (for invalids) to an instrument that rolls spaghetti are on display at this year's Brussels Inventors Exhibition, claimed by its organisers to be the largest of its type in the world.

More than a thousand inventors from 27 countries are exhibiting at Brussels -- each with the hope of selling the idea to a commercial sponsor.

Heading the organising committee is M. Paul Quintin, and he says that 40 per cent of the inventors exhibiting last year successfully sold their ideas.

    M. Quintin is at pains to emphasis that modern inventors are not absent-minded profiteers who produce hars-??? ???home. He says in fact they come from all walks of life -- from unemployed labourers to trained engineers. And with patents becoming increasingly expensive to obtain their inventions, he says, are by no means hare-brained.

The Brussels Inventors Exhibition opened on Friday (10 March) and last ten days.

SYNOPSIS: A glimpse of the future at this year's Brussels Inventors Exhibition. This model shows fog shrouding a modern highway. The purpose is to demonstrate how one inventor sees the problem overcome.

And for those who've always considered their liquor cabinet something that stands by the wall -- how's this for a new idea? It comes from Switzerland, one of twenty-seven countries represented at the exhibition. Altogether, a thousand inventors have items on display here: each hopes to attract the eye of a commercial sponsor. Last year exhibitors sold about 40 per cent of their ideas.

A bath with a door in it is another idea from Switzerland. The door would provide many access to the bath for invalid and the elderly. And when the door is closed it becomes watertight.

One of the largest exhibits -- a mobile extending platform. It comes from Italy and has the great advantage of compactness when it's withdrawn.

And this little item is aimed at the gourmet. It's a small cooking unit which can be placed on the table beside the diner. It runs on methylated spirits. As the inventor says -- what could be more pleasant for an intimate dinner?
Finally -- a new solution to an age old problem. (PAUSE 3 seconds). The Brussels Inventors Exhibition is claimed to be the largest of its kind in the world. It's the twenty-firs year it's been hold. The exhibition opened on Friday and lasts for ten days.
