  • Description

MR. TIMOTHY CROSTHWAIT, THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER WHO WAS ORDERED OUT OF ZANZIBAR, ARRIVED IN DAR-ES-SALAAM YESTERDAY (THURSDAY). HE AND HIS STAFF FLEW IN A SPECIAL DAKOTA AND WERE WELCOMED BY MR. MILES, THE ACTING BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER TO TANGANYIKA.

HE WAS GIVEN 24 HOURS TO LEAVE THE ISLAND BY PRESIDENT ABEID KARUME BECAUSE OF BRITAIN'S DELAY IN RECOGNISING THE NEW LEFT-WING REVOLUTIONARY GOVERNMENT WHICH CAME TO POWER LAST MONTH. (BRITAIN HAS SAID THAT SHE WILL RECOGNISE THE NEW REGIME ONLY WHEN "THINGS BECOME CLEARER, MORE DEFINITE AND MORE STABLE").

MR. CROSTHWAIT SAID PRESIDENT KARUME HAD TOLD HIM A POLITICAL QUESTION ONLY WAS INVOLVED. THE ZANZIBAR GOVERNMENT STILL WANTED BRITISH PEOPLE TO REMAIN IN THE ISLAND AND THEIR SECURITY WOULD BE GUARANTEED.

AT THE SAME TIME, THE ACTING U.S. CHARGE D'AFFAIRES, MR. DONALD PETERSEN, WAS ALSO ORDERED OUT -- AGAIN FOR WASHINGTON'S DELAY IN RECOGNISING THE GOVERNMENT. HE ARRIVED IN DAR-ES-SALAAM LAST NIGHT.
