  • Description

A BRASS-BAND IN DADA-STYLE COSTUMES CLOGGED UP THE SMALL NARROW STREETS OF ZURICH QUARTER YESTERDAY (SATURDAY), DANCED UNDER DECORATIONS WHICH DIGNIFIED NOTHING, ACCORDING TO DADA DICTATES, AND CELEBRATED IN TUMULT THE BEGINNING OF THE ANTI-ART MOVEMENT IN THE CITY FIFTY YEARS AGO.

THE MAYOR OF ZURICH TRIED A FEW SENTENCES TO MARK THE EVENT BUT GAVE UP IN THE FACE OF THE COMPETITION FROM THE DADA BAND, COMPLETE WITH BLARING TRUMPETS AND THROBBING TOM-TOMS. HE MANAGED HOWEVER TO UNVEIL A COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUE - WHOSING A HUMAN NAVEL. TRUE TO THE SPIRIT OF DADA, THE OCCASION WAS NOT LIKELY TAKEN SERIOUSLY.

THE PLAQUE, CREATED BY HANS ARP, THE LEADER OF THE DADA SCHOOL, WAS UNVEILED AT AN OLD CAFE, THE CAFE MEIREI, WHERE A GROUP OF AVANT-GARDE ARTISTS REDECORATED THE PLACE AND ESTABLISHED IT IN FEBRUARY 1916 AS THE CABARET VOLTAIRE, THE BIRTHPLACE OF DADA, THE MOVEMENT TO ABANDON ALL FORM, CONVENTION AND TRADITION. DADA WAS SHORT-LIVED AS A MOVEMENT BUT AS AN INFLUENCE, STRONG UNDERTONES REMAIN IN TWENTIETH-CENTURY ART AND THOUGHT.
