    A BIG OCCASION FOR AFRICAN MEDICAL PROGRESS AND CLOSER SCIENTIFIC COOPERATION BETWEEN WEST AFRICAN STATES AND FRANCE: THE 5TH AFRICAN MEDICAL CONGRESS, WHICH OPENED IN DAKAR, CAPITAL OF SENEGAL ON MONDAY, 16TH JANUARY. THE FIRST FORMAL WORKING SESSION WAS ATTENDED BY PRESIDENT SENGHOR AND THE FRENCH MINISTER OF SOCIAL AFFAIRS, M. JEAN-MARCEL JEANNENEY.

    PROFESSOR GROUET PRAISED THE PROGRESS MADE IN CUTTING DOWN THE MORTALITY RATE IN MANY AFRICAN COUNTRIES AND THE CONSEQUENT RAISING OF THE AVERAGE LIFE SPAN. IN THIS CONNECTION HE PRAISED THE WORK OF THE MEDICAL FACULTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF DAKAR IN PARTICULAR.

    THROUGHOUT THE DISCUSSIONS GREAT EMPHASIS WAS PLACED BY ALL THE SPEAKERS ON THE CLOSE COOPERATION BETWEEN AFRICAN STATES AND FRANCE.

    ALTHOUGH THIS IS THE FIFTH AFRICAN MEDICAL CONGRESS, IT IS THE FIRST TO BE HELD IN DAKAR.
