Background: Cubans daily file into the U.S. Embassy, Havana, Cuba, to apply for visas. In the past few days, some 19600 have lodged applications. In August, the Embassy issued 7,000 visas. In September, the figure was higher but Embassy officials were so busy they were unable to count the applicants.

Demands for visas increased following the seizure of U.S. concerns and firms by Cuba, putting many people out of work. Other applicants include persons opposed to Dr. Castro's policies who seek a new life in the U.S.

Embassy officials said news of the arrival of U.S. marines at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and of Cuba's charge of U.S. 'invasion' had little or no effect on the increase of visa applications. Except for those with urgent reasons for emigrating, applications in these queues were not expected to received their visas until a year from now.
