  • Description

International soccer -- and at the Velez Sarsfield stadium in Buenos Aires, capital of Argentina, the national team met the Peru national side on Wednesday (10 November) to compete for the Ramon Castilla Cup.

SYNOPSIS: In the first half Argentina -- playing in the striped shirts -- were quick to demonstrate the speed with which they could mount an attack and sustain it despite the efforts of the Peruvian defence. But the Peruvians soon got their game together, and the match became a much more equal contest.

This free kick awarded to Argentina for a minor infringement by Peru produced one of several chances for the Argentine forwards to take shots at goal.

Peru kicked off for the second half with neither side having put a score on the board. Argentina is receiving increasing attention from international soccer associations throughout the world as work accelerates on the facilities for hosting the World Cup in 1978. A side effect is that referees in Argentina are taking much tighter control of matches. The referee's decision to disallow this goal for an off-side infringement must have been a borderline case.

However, the problems facing Argentina's ability to be host to the World Cup, do not arise from the field of play. International soccer organisations are increasingly concerned about the apparent political instability in the country. Later this month a delegation from FIFA -- the International Federation of Football Associations -- will he visiting Buenos Aires to inspect the preparations already in hand, but more importantly to assess the likelihood of the World Cup being held free of political violence.

One of the finest performances of the match came from the Peruvian defender, Julio Melendez. He was formerly a member of the team that won the Argentine National Championships in 1969. The only goal of the match was scored by Passarella, 17 minutes after the interval. It gave Argentina victory, one goal to nil.
