  • Description

On May 6 twenty five years ago Britain celebrated King George V's Silver Jubilee.

One of the principal events marking the 25th year of the reign was a service at St. Paul's Cathedral, London, attended by the King and Queen Mary.

Driving in an open coach from Buckingham Palace to St. Paul's, the King touched the sword held by London's Lord Mayor at Temple Bar, where the City of London's boundary crosses Fleet Street and the Strand. In accordance with ancient tradition, the Sovereign receives and returns to the Lord Mayor the sword of the city when entering the city state.

The crowd lining the route between the Palace and St. Paul's gave their Majesties an enthusiastic welcome as they passed by, and again when they appeared later on the Palace balcony.

The King died only a few months later - early in 1936 - Queen Mary surviving him until her death in 1953. In the Jubilee procession were the Duke and Duchess of York, later to become King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
