  • Description

At dawn today tanks and infantry carried out an amphibious assault on the beaches at Khrysokhou Bay, west of Polis, as part of the Combined Services Exercises "Kestrel".

The exercise started at first light with men of the Royal Berkshire Regiment surging ashore in landing craft from their parent ships in the bay to take the beach before the supporting four tanks of 6 Royal Tank Regiment roared ashore to help them advance on their objective. This was a hill nearly 3000 feet high at Ayios Yeorgios, where a company of the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry were dug in to defend an Anti-Aircraft battery. As the troops and tanks advanced over the rugged countryside jet aircraft of 247 Squadron screamed overhead to pummel the defenders positions, early in the attack devoting their attention to armoured cars of the Royal Horse Guards which were acting in support of the K.O.Y.L.I.

Support from the destroyer Solebay laying offshore provided some of the most spectacular early effects, as explosives were detonated on and near the beach to simulate the fall of shells from her 4.5 inch guns.

The exercise went as planned, with the men of the Berkshire Regiment reaching their objective, which was in the clouds when they closed with the defenders, just 7 hours after the first men touched the beach. Throughout "Kestrel" explosives and smoke could be heard and seen as explosives were detonated to increase the realism of the action.

The exercise ended with the withdrawal of the troops to the beach.

Among those watching the exercise were Lieut General Sir Geoffrey K. Bourne KCB., C.B.E., D.S.O., C-in-C MELF and Major General D.A. Kendrew, C.B.E., D.S.O., CCC Cyprus District.
