    PRESIDENT CHUNG-HEE PARK OF SOUTH KOREA TODAY (FRIDAY) IN SEOUL ORDERED A DRASTIC PURGE OF OFFICIALS IN HIS DEMOCRATIC REPUBLICAN PARTY IN AN EFFORT TO END THE STUDENT RIOTS OVER ALLEGED IRREGULARITIES IN LAST ??? WEEKS NATIONAL ELECTIONS. HOWEVER, THE GOVERNMENT PARTY, WHICH WON 130 OF THE 175 ASSEMBLY SEATS, HAS REJECTED A DEMAND BY THE OPPOSITION NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY, FOR ANOTHER POLL.

    PRESIDENT PARK ANNOUNCED TODAY THAT HE HAD INSTRUCTED HIS PARTY TO EXPEL SIX SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES, ONE DEFEATED CANDIDATE AND 125 PARTY OFFICIALS. TWO OTHER CANDIDATES, EXPELLED EARLIER THIS WEEK FOLLOWING ALLEGATIONS THAT THE ELECTIONS WERE RIGGED, ARE NOW UNDER ARREST.

    THE PRESIDENT'S STATEMENT CAME AS ABOUT 6,000 SEOUL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TRIED TO STAGE STREET DEMONSTRATIONS IN GROUPS OF SEVERAL HUNDRED. THEY WERE DISPERSED BY RIOT POLICE. YESTERDAY -- WHEN THIS FILM WAS TAKEN -- POLICE ARRESTED 525 OF SOME 15,000 STUDENTS WHO POURED INTO THE STREETS OF SEOUL TO PROTEST AGAINST ALLEGED ELECTION RIGGING.

    THE EDUCATION MINISTRY SAID TODAY THAT 128 HIGH SCHOOLS AND 28 UNIVERSITIES AND COLLECTS HAD NOW SUSPENDED CLASSES SINCE THE DEMONSTRATIONS BEGAN.
