  • Description

West German technicians were recently completing one of the boldest building projects in Europe - an artificial island, standing in the sea on eight "legs" between Bremerhaven and Heligoland.

On this great construction - which cost about GBP1/2 million - they were erecting a new lighthouse called "Old Weser", built at Kiel dockyards. It will replace the old conventional lighthouse, known as "Red Sand" which would cost too much to repair.

The 50 workers and technicians on the building site were to work and live there until the new lighthouse was up. A supply ship brings their food and letters - and an occasional cask of rum. Radio-telephone is their only link with the outside world.
