Background: THE HUGE VOLTA RIVER PROJECT AT AKOSOMBO, IN GHANA, AND ONE OF AFRICA'S MOST IMPORTANT HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEMES, IS NEARING COMPLETION. ALREADY THE GREAT DAM ITSELF HAS BEEN OFFICIALLY OPENED, AND THE FIRST DELIVERY OF POWER IS EXPECTED IN SEPTEMBER.

THE VOLTA DAM PROJECT WILL PROVIDE POWER FOR NEW INDUSTRIES, INCLUDING A GBP100,000,000 ALUMINUM SMELTER, AS WELL AS LOCAL POWER, WATER FOR CONSUMPTION AND IRRIGATION, AND A HUGE LAKE FOR FISHING. IT IS THE CORNERSTONE OF GHANA'S ECONOMIC GROWTH PLAN, OF WHICH THE MAIN PURPOSE IS TO END DEPENDENCE ON ONE PRODUCT - COCOA.

THE PROJECT'S TOTAL POWER OUTPUT IS EXPECTED TO BE 580,000,000 KILOWATTS AND PROVISION HAS BEEN MADE FOR OUTPUT TO BE STEPPED UP TO 768,000,000 KILOWATTS. THE WORK IS BEING CARRIED OUT BY AN ITALIAN COMPANY, WITH SUB-CONTRACTORS FROM A DOZEN COUNTRIES, AT A COST OF GBP70,000,000.

THE DAM ITSELF IS EXPECTED TO COST GBP42,000,000. IT IS 2000 FEET (550 METRES) HIGH AND 440 FEET (136 METRES) WIDE.

GHANA IS NOW RESETTLING SOME 80,000 PEOPLE FROM 780 VILLAGES WHICH WILL DISAPPEAR UNDER THE WATERS OF THE DAM -- THE LARGEST MAN MADE LAKE IN THE WORLD, COVERING SOME 3,275 SQUARE MILES. THE VILLAGES ARE BEING RE-SETTLED IN 52 NEW TOWNSHIPS.
