  • Description

On one of his rare journeys away from home the President of the Central African Republic, Jean Bedel Bokassa, arrived in the Gabonese capital, Libreville, on Friday (1 October) for a three-day friendly visit.

SYNOPSIS: He was met at the airport by President Omar Bongo and other government officials. His stay was one of several recent visits to Gabon by African leaders. Although the visit was reported an informal one, it was expected that talks between the two leaders would centre around relations and co-operation between their two countries.

It's not very often President Bokassa ventures away from home. There have been three attempts to depose him in the last seven years. He became president in 1966 after seizing power from President David Dacko. Since then he's ruled the Central African Republic with absolute authority. In 1972 he elected president for life.
