  • Description

DEMONSTRATIONS OVER THE DEVALUATION OF THE OLD MALAY DOLLAR LED TO CLASHES BETWEEN THE MALAYS AND CHINESE IN PENANG ON FRIDAY (24 NOVEMBER). ELEVEN PEOPLE WERE REPORTED KILLED AND 60 INJURED, 40 SERIOUSLY.

RIOTING ERUPTED SUDDENLY AND CAUGHT MANY PEOPLE BY SURPRISE. POLICE IMMEDIATELY IMPOSED A CURFEW ON THE SMALL ISLAND OFF MALAYA'S NORTHWEST COAST.

THE GOVERNMENTS OF MALAYSIA, SINGAPORE AND BRUNEI HAVE DEVALUED THE OLD CURRENCY BY 15 PER CENT FOLLOWING BRITAIN'S DEVALUATION OF THE POUND ON SATURDAY, 18 NOVEMBER. BUT THE NEW DOLLAR ISSUED ON JUNE 12TH THIS YEAR RETAINED ITS VALUE.

THERE IS STILL ABOUT 400 MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF THE OLD CURRENCY IN CIRCULATION AND THE GOVERNMENT HAS OPENED TALKS TO FIX A DATE WHEN OLD NOTES WILL NO LONGER BE VALID.

BUS COMPANIES WITHDREW THEIR BUSES ON FRIDAY AFTER STONES HAD BEEN THROWN AT THEM. GOVERNMENT OFFICES OPENED AS USUAL BUT MOST COMMERCIAL FIRMS CLOSED DOWN.

THE POLICE WERE KEPT BUSY RACING FROM ONE TROUBLE SPOT TO ANOTHER.

THE MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT HAS CLAIMED THAT THE VIOLENCE IS INSPIRED BY BANNED COMMUNISTS WHO HAVE INFILTRATED THE LABOUR PARTY. PRIME MINISTER TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN HAS ACCUSED PARTY ELEMENTS OF TURNING THE DEVALUATION ISSUE INTO A CLASH BETWEEN THE MALAYS AND CHINESE.
