  • Description

The end of Henley Regatta July 2 - Britain's colourful two-week festival of rowing - this year a preview of the Rome Olympics.

Centrepiece of the day: The Grand Challenge Cup between Molesey Boat Club and an eight from Oxford University - the first all-England final for seven years. A tense match, but despite the University's stride, a victory for Molesey in just a third of a length and in time only five seconds short of the fastest for this event. Their win may earn them a chance of representing Britain in the Olympic Regatta. For Oxford it was the first time they had rowed here as an official crew since 1853.

In the double Sculls final, the UK team of G. C. Justicz and N. J. Birkmyre beat the French team of B. Monnereau and R. Duhamel (Club Nautique et Athletique de Rouen) by 1 3/4 lengths in seven minutes 17 seconds - four seconds faster than the Swiss record set seven years ago.

In the Diamond Sculls final, S. A. Mackenzie of Australia won for the fourth successive year, beating T. Kocerka of Poland (1955-56 winner) by half a length in eight minutes three seconds.
