Background: ASHAM WOODS, SOMERSET, UNITED KINGDOM

The International Sidecar-Cross Grand Prix of Great Britain was held at the Asham Woods course near Frome, Somerset, United Kingdom, on May 6. As in 1983, the British grand prix was the second round of the World Championship series. Like solo moto-cross, the sidecar event is held on an unsurfaced country track. The race was held over two legs. The first leg was won by the Swiss favourites, Hans Bachtold and passenger Fritz Fuss, on their Dutch EML-Jumbo (No. 6). Their new special works-built machine gave them the edge over their opponents. They also took the second leg -- and with it, overall victory. Behind them in the second leg came fellow Swiss rider Herbert Huwyler, with his passenger Hansruedi Huwyler, on a KTM (No. 21). They were also second overall. In third place in the second leg, and also third overall, were British champions Terry Good and passenger Garry Withers, principal riders of the works Wasp team (No. 7).
